The Click & Pledge Foundation video series, “COVID-19: Beneath the Surface”, looks beyond the headlines to uncover the ripple effects of the new coronavirus. As the virus continues to surge across the U.S., there is another deadly pandemic raging in the shadows. Drug overdoses, many of which are fatal, have risen more than 40 percent over 2019 numbers. Addiction experts attribute this to the sweeping changes that COVID-19 has brought, including social isolation, economic stress, parenting demands, and even differing mixes of drugs due to disrupted supply across closed borders.

We spoke to Mike Wade, communications and outreach coordinator for New River Valley Community Services in Blacksburg, Virginia. NRVCS provides behavioral health services to adults and children with mental illness, developmental challenges, and/or substance use disorders.
